First, you'd best be certain that there's a legitimate basis for expecting them to pay for it, read your policy very carefully.

Then you should consult a couple of roofing companies and ask them how best to get it done, they have lots of experience dealing with these problems and can give you some guidance.

Once you have your ducks in a row, contact your insurance agent first, don't go directly to the company. The agent also has lots of experience and is interested in keeping you as a client.

You need to first make sure that you have probable damage by a storm. I would have a contrator come out and give an estimate and see what they say...they can teel if there has been hail or anything else caused by a storm. It will also depend on how many layers of shingles you have most of the time an insurance will only pay for one layer of tear off and the other is on you, plus if your house needs redecked (the plywood base that the sheeting and shingles go on), that will be costly. I wouldn't recommend calling the insurance until you've done some investigating first, you may end up spending the biggest share of the expense because they won't pay for everything.

Was your roof damaged? If it is just normal wear and deterioration that would be insurance fraud and you need to pay for it yourself.

If it was damaged in a way that your insurance covers just submit a claim.

Unless it was damaged by storms or fire, it probably won't be paid for by your insurance company. Your premiums do not cover normal wear.
