I hurt it a few years ago by hyper-extending it. I never thought much of it, just limped around for a few days and took it easy until it "healed".

It has since become a pretty big problem for me. I can't run long distances without it hurting and tightening up. When I run it is fine at first but starts to feel like it's not rotating correctly after a while, and then after a little bit longer it hurts a lot and it becomes impossible to run or even walk on it.

In daily life it feels ok, with a slight pain every now and then. It feels like its maybe something with my LCL or something around there. Sometimes when I stretch my leg is "clicks".

I want to get back into sports again. Using a brace doesn't really help.

What should I do? Will a doctor be able to help? I don't want to get surgery! My knee only causes major issues when I'm running or playing sports, not in my every day life. But I don't want to give up athletics.

I don't remember hearing a pop, and although it was very painful, it was not the excruciating pain that I've heard happens when a ligament tears.

It sounds like you are going to have to make a choice. Give up sports and let our knee heal with out re injuring it (which is what you are doing every time you engage in sports) and not have surgery or have surgery and continue with your sports.
Either way your knee will never be the same.
You may end up having surgery anyways in the future when you get older if you want to be able to walk. Scar tissue forms after an injury and can cause decrease movement to the joint making it very painful to walk.
Seek treatment now while you are still young. Contact a Sports medicine Orthopedic surgeon in your area. This won't get better.

Stop running and playing sports. You may not want to, but if you want to be walking in 10 or 20 years, you need to get this knee as completely repaired as possible.

Over a period of 35 years I fell down a flight of concrete stairs, fell on my knees carrying my son going up a step and fell down more stairs a few years ago. So maybe you can tell I know about knee damage. Now I have Rheumatoid arthritis in those joints.

Here is my solution, use this for a while before you try to continue sports and running. Get a hinged knee brace. Not the elastic type, the velcro wrap type with the steel hinges.
Wearing this will take the body weight off of your knee joint.
For me it worked surprisingly fast. Then I wore it on an as needed basis. Not at all now. I would say I probably wore it daily for up to a month and off and on for a few months.

Take IBUPROFEN for the inflammation and swelling in the joint. The combination of those two should be helpful.

When you hurt your knee, Did you hear/feel your knee pop? Where was the pain? Yes, I would definately see an orthopedic Dr. to find out what's wrong with it. If it is and ACL or LCL,ect. In general the only way you can return to athletics is to have surgery to replace the torn ligament/s and after 6 months or so you should be back to normal. good luck

Go to the doctor and get them to take an x-ray of your knee. because it could be a wrongly healed MCL, ACL or LCL injury it may not cause too much of a problem now but later in life it will cause lots of problems
