It is possible for the company to hand the whole thing over to the DA and you could have charges brought up against you. If you stole $6000 from work, then how is that different from stealing $6000 from a neighbor? Going to jail is a big possibility here.

The amount you stole makes it a felony. To try to avoid jail time, put the money back and confess. You may get fired, but anything is better than going to jail.

The amount you stole places you at a felony. Your company very well could prosecute you. Jail time is likely.
Best thing to do is return the money discreetly if possible.
