Few automobile manufacturers will ever recommend non detergent motor oil. About the only thing you use non detergent motor oil in is a small engine. Think Lawn Mower. Your owner's manual will tell you what motor oil you should be using. Follow the owner's manual and you will never go wrong. If you lost your owner's manual you can always ask the service department from the closest dealer that sell your make of car. They would also be happy to tell you what type of oil you should be using.

C (compression) rated oil is different from motor oil used in gas engines Many oils are rated for both but make sure the oil has the CC, CD, CE, CF, CG, CH rating listing on the can. Weight can be as needed for your climate - a multi rating like 10-40 or 15-40 should be fine.
