When's the best time to travel to Machu Picchu and how many days should I plan my trip for?

My best friend are trying to plan a trip to Peru so we can experience the Inca trail, but we're not sure how to plan our trip. Also, what's the best way to reach Machu Picchu from Lima?

You have to go from Lima to Cuzco, the trail starts outside small village close by. You will need about 7-8 days for the trip, as the hike is 4 days by-itself (all though they do have a shorter hike lasting two days). The best time is June to August but you can go all the way to October without a problem. You might not be able to go this year, as this is very late in the planning stage. They only allow 500 visitors a year on the trail and it books very early. Give it a try, but you are probably going to have to go next year.
