I live in a block of flats, and today we received a letter from the property developer warning us that letterboxes have been tampered with and to be wary of ID theft. I seem to be missing a couple of bank statements, so assuming they could be in the hands of an unscrupulous individual, what could happen and what could I do to stop something bad happening?

Contact your bank and have them keep an eye out for any unusual activity and have them give you a call. Most banks nowadays do not use your whole account number on the statement they just use the last four digits.

The first thing that I would do is to make a report of the stolen/missing bank statements to the police.

I really don't know how missing bank statements will affect you though. Usually bank statements do not have the complete account number (safely issues). Bank statements only shows the transactions that you did the prior month.

Now, if your "credit" card statements have been stolen, then I would worry. People can buy things on-line just with your credit card information. Not all websites request the last 3 digits from behind the credit card.

If this does happen I would report it to the police and then I would call your credit card company immediately and cancel that particular credit card and have them replace it with a new credit card number.

Looks like you are in the UK. You should definitely do the following: 1. make a police report 2. contact your credit card companies and let them know. They can put a watch on your account or issue a new card number 3. contact your bank and let them know 4. In the US you should get a copy of your credit reports from the three major credit reporting agencies. I'm not sure if the same companies are appropriate for UK'ers. But I'm sure you have a credit report somewhere. You should contact them. They can put a credit watch on your account. Finally, in the US, you could get a postal box at the Post Office and just go to the post office and get your mail. IF you had a problem once, you will probably have one again.

GOOD LUCK

I'm going to assume that you are on the net as you have posted a question. So why not do your banking on line and ask the Bank not to send statements. That way you will cut down the risk, and it's greener for the planet t' boot. :)

Yes they could get all your information and steal your identity. Instead of being on yahoo answers you should be calling the ss fraud hotline. Here I will give you the number: 1800-269-0271. Call this number and tell them your story. They will help you. Good luck and Im sorry you have to go through this.
