Thats like does a tree make a noise when it falls in the forest, if no one is there.

Yes fish smell in and out of the water, its more pronounced when its dead as with all dead things however, trying to smell something underwater is not very practical for air breating species.

fish dont have the smell we associate with them if their fresh ,if a fish smells fishy then it is old and it is advisable not to eat it. A fish from a river will smell like a river and a fish from the sea should smell like the sea.
The fishy smell takes 2 or 3 days to get up ure nose thats why most boats pack the fish in ice as soon as their caught

Scientists have been studying the olfactory senses of fish for years now. Can fish smell under water? Well with the many discoveries that have been made through the years it has become quite evident that fish can detect smells underwater.

In fact, their sense of smell is quite superior to ours and it has even been compared to that of dogs. This would certainly account for the introduction over the past few years of new lures in which some sort of attractants/scents have been impreganated directly into the baits.

The scientists at the berkley fishing plants for instance, have become aware of the fact that fish and bass in general have an accute sense of smell, compelling them to produce a fine line of quality bass catching lures that incorporate such attractants.

Tests show that the bass can detect these attractants when other adverse sensory conditions like poor visibility prevail. Testing also shows that fish will hold onto the scented bait for longer periods of time than a bait not treated with any sort of attractants.

Yes they can smell under the water. That is why they make fish baits that smell.

I agree with previous answers. The smell that we associate with fish is the smell of the flesh rotting. The same with the smells we associate with other meats. The fish will smell like the water it is in, whilst it is alive.

Smells occur in gaseous atmospheres not in water.

Basically nothing smells under the water and fishes do not smell for as long as they are living creatures in the water.

Continue the water changes every other day and be sure to vacuum the gravel as you remove the old water. Once a tank gets that dirty it can take several water changes to clear it up again. Be sure to rinse off the filter pad in the old tank water with each water change to remove what was caught in the filter. MM
