I've had a laptop returned to me, from a field employee that, won't turn on. It is fairly new. It has a CentrinoDuo processor. The battery physically tests at 50% power, but the laptop is getting no juice. I've tried plugging in the a/c. I've also tried plugging in the a/c and removing the battery. Nothing seems to get the laptop to turn on or receive any juice whatsoever. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!! :)

It's made by Gateway. Unfortunately no warranty. Oh, and there appears to be no physical damage nor anything having been spilt on it.

Could be the power button, motherboard or CPU. Test the CPU in another laptop to start...that's my guess.

Depends.... what make is it? I have recently seen quite a few Sony's refuse to start up, seems to be an issue with the motherboard and needs to be returned to the manufacturer.

Another favourite is... has something been spilt on it that your employee isnt telling you about? Any signs of stickiness anywhere? (as in Coke or Wine!)

I would check the following first though...
Take the battery out, wait a few minutes then put back in, sometimes machines lockup when the battery gets too low.

Has the fuse gone on the PSU? When you plug the power in does the LED on the laptop show it being charged? If the light is not showing then it's almost certain there is just no power going to the laptop.

If the above dont help then it's quite possible it has developed a fault, how old is it? Is it still under warranty?

I recommend you use Power Drain procedure by following these steps:

1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery.
3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter.
5. Turn on the Notebook power.

Depending on manufacturer there was a recent rash of power issues with motherboards from hp and dell. SO if this is the type you ahve could be the issue. Check to see if the laptop is under warranty and if so call for support

It sounds like a power supply problem. I've never dealt with a laptop PSU but this is the same type of symptoms I've seen with desktop units. Go to the manufacturer website, and check on the support pages for power supply issues.

Hi. The laptop is probably getting power but it sounds like it may have a blown fuse. Have it checked.

Me personally, I would hand it back to the employee and tell him to get it professionally fix seeing as it was alright but he/she got their hands on it
