He used what is called binomial nomenclature. That means each species was given two names, the Genus and the species name. The Genus name is capitalized, but the species name is not, and both names are usually either underlined or italicized. Example: Homo sapiens. (people)

Linnaeus is pretty famous for his taxonomy. He named animals with a hierarchy, starting with Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Genus, and Species.

For example, humans are:
Animalia (Kingdom), Chordata (Phylum), Mammalia (Class), Primates (Order), Homo (Genus), Sapien (Species)
