It's Shakesperian for, "Should I kill myself?" The whole Hamlet monologue just says by killing himself, he spares himself all the pain and strife life gives us. But he is uncertain about what life is like after death. Is it like sleeping or dreaming, is it bad, painful, good? Is there a Heaven or Hell, and which one is he going to? He then decides that he should stay alive, since he is uncertain about life after death. Back then, putting philosophical problems in plays was the best way to get the idea out to people, like Fight Club or something.

Howard roark is right but failed to mention that , being a christian Hamlet knew it was wrong to kill himself. To be or not to be means should I exist (live) or not exist. This was Hamlets dilemma. He was pissed off cos his uncle killed his dad and then shagged his mother, he then killed Polonius by accident cos he was behind a curtain and Ham thought it was his evil uncle, and to cut a long story short he had had enough, and was contemplating suicide. His religious beliefs wouldn't allow him to do this, but he got killed anyway so it dont matter

Cogito Ergo Sum...I think therefore I am. Descartes.
You can neither be or not be without the other. Thinking implies existence in the very nature of participating in the creative act. to be implies that you can not be, but you can't not be without having first been.

Hamlet was contemplating suicide, whether life was worth the struggle. He considered whether things could be even worse when you are dead or whether nothing matters after death. Deciding that he is unsure he opts to keep on living.

To be or not to be, that is the question. The answer is, we ARE, whether we like it or not.

To apply myself, or not? I choose to BE, to exist by trying to exist, and exist well.
