A fairly in depth knowledge of windows and its applications is a very big advatage as you will be learning the highly advanced ways of working with windows and network domains.

If you wish to become an MCSE, you should have a good understanding of computers and some basic (at least) knowledge of how networks operate. Knowledge of computer hardware would be of help, as well.
