A combination of hormones, chemical release and contractions. When your body is ready to give birth, chemicals called prostiglandins are released from your adrenal glands that cause your uterus to release and contract, causing the cervix to loosen and dilate.

Interestingly enough..Semen contains prostiglandins and orgasm causes uterine contractions which is why many doctors recommend sex late in normal pregnancy.

I agree with Shelerella!! that sounds about as close and right on the money as a dr. would say!! best answer to her!!

Don't worry, not everyone has or notices braxton hicks contractions. They don't affect whether you dilate or not. When you are ready you will start to dilate. If you don't dilate on your own, then the doctor may induce labor, but usually not until your due date has come and gone. Good luck with the delivery.
