Clemens signed a pro-rated $28 million contract with the Yankees.

But, it doesn't take effect until he's activated on the day of his first start for the Yankees, correct?

So, I assume he's being paid a minor league contract right now. How does that work? Does he sign 2 contracts? Is he on the so-called 40 man roster?

Oh, if he is on the 40 man roster, does he just replace another guy? Is it easy to get rid of someone from the 40 man roster? What happens to that replaced player, do they have to be paid by the minor league team instead of the major league team?

he does not have a minor league contract. It's a specification with his Yankees contract that he doesn't get paid until he makes a major league start. Its not up to the MLB how the Yankees pay him. So right now he is not on the Yanks 40 man roster, when they bring him up, hopefuly sat vs the Pirates, then his payment starts...the contarct however has offically started, otherwise he wouldnt be able to play for the minor league teams

Clemens signed what's called a split contract - such a contract states that the player will earn a certain salary as a major league player but a different amount while assigned to a minor league club. Such contracts are most common with young players or low-level free agent signings.

Clemens is not currently on the Yankees' 40-man roster. When he is activated, they will need to remove someone to make a space for him.

part of his major league contract means that h'es on the 40 man roster already. so these starts in the minors are basically REHAB so to speak starts for his major league team (he's not being paid by the minor league team in other words)

as for the player he'll replace (they have many on the dl right now) the yanks will option someone (probably a rookie) back to triple aaa-players have limited number of options..once that number is up they either have to keep that player on roster or place him on waivers..i don't know the complete yankee roster..so i can't tell you who they'll send down but i'm sure it would be a rookie with a few options left (probably one of their pitchers)

and yes teams can just dump a player for another. happens all the time.
