Depends on the context.
For electricity, its the flow of current, determined by the flick of a switch.
For life its being alive or being dead....your heart, your brain, your body stopping to function defines one´s death, physically....and i really dont know about spiritual death, im not a spiritual person but it really makes me wonder sometimes what happens when we die...is that really it? Does our existence really vanish just like that...i havent found an answer that opposes this idea yet, so i cant say anything for sure just yet....maybe its just hard for me to grasp that after death, it really is all over....hmm...i dont know.
And when you´re alive, well you can still be dead inside sometimes, and thats defined by your level of happines and peace of mind....being happy with yourself and being okay with who you are....feeling like you have a purpose and of course most of all, having freedom. All those things define the survival of that inner fire.
