Do everything SFNDX said. Also, install Windows Defender :
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
After installing Defender, open the program up. Then find the button that says "Tools" then find the button that says "Software Manager" (it might be program manager or something close to that.) Anyway, when you open it up, there should be a list of programs on the bottom left-hand side of the box and a drop down list above that. Click on the drop-down list and select "Startup Programs" (It should be on "startup programs" by default, but make sure.) Then look at the list of programs and find out which ones you DO NOT need at startup. Use your own judgement on what to keep, but chances are, you do not need most of the stuff.

Try downloading two free programs to get rid of some of the hidden stuff running in the background. The first one is Ad-Aware. The second one is Spybot. You can get them for free at Download.com. I recommend using both of them. They work in different ways to remove spyware and other stuff that may be clogging your system.
Also, try defragmenting your computer. That may help as well. Another step you could take is to uninstall programs you don't need. Hopefully, this will work to help get your computer running faster
Good luck!

If it had been a while since you last bought the computer and had not upgraded the hard drive or RAM, then its time to do it. Check your system configuration against a gaming PC's configuration. Upgrade the ones that lack. Uninstall software that you do not use. Run antivirus programs regularly to check for viruses, spywares, tracking cookies, etc and remove them.

If your PC used to be faster, or is acting strangely, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".
Then, you need to install: ONE Anti-virus (AVG free), ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm free), and Anti-spyware tools like: Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster and cCleaner (free, use all 5 regularly).
Google for them, install them and learn how to use them.
TIP: Last resort, back up (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) all personal data and do a Windows "Clean Install", more info at (www.theeldergeek.com). The apps above can only clean up so much.

if you have a lot of pictures and games, these take up a lot of memory, and makes loading other programs slow, if you are sure that you have no viruses, spyware or the such, try removing some pictures to a flash drive or cd, to free up the memory, also music takes up a lot of space, when you turn your machine on, it loads it all into memory, ,,you can also delete the log in the pre-fetch file
