1. I like mystery, detective thrillers, fantasy, historical fiction, comedy ( PG Wodehouse sort), classics and romance (not too sentimental).

2. The basic things like an interesting plot line, good characterisation, nice language and a satisfying climax should be there of course. Bonus would be likeable characters because I keep falling in love with fictional characters.
Also I wish that at the end the story turns out the way the readers want to. For example, in romantic fiction, I would like the interesting guy to get the girl. Not the morally upright and devoted, yet boring guy. Not all writers manage to understand what the readers want.
That kind of book would get a 10 from me.

3. For me an ideal storyline would be a dark murder mystery set in the say, 1800s. There should be an eerie atmosphere, a sufficiently complex plot and a twist in the tale, with slight comedy to provide relief. Also a tinge of the supernatural and a bit of romance wouldn't hurt.

I like any kind of fiction. For me to read a book and rate it a 10, it would have to be pretty suspenseful to keep you from putting the book down. If the story started with, "I was born in Alabama. I was very poor." I would put the book down. There needs to be action. The starting of the story is very important. There are different kinds of lay outs. You could start out at the beginning being an old man, but tell a story about when he was young, like "Where the Red Fern Grows". There are many different kinds I like.

i prefer mysteries. especially the ones that keep you guessing until the very end. i love Stephen King, because he will kill off ANYBODY at ANYTIME. It makes me really mad sometimes, but then I love it because I know ANYTHING might happen. v. v. satisfying.
