It's a law of life! In the 'seven spiritual laws', Deepak Chopra, talks about 'law of giving': in giving, you harness, find , muster more energy and more resources of all kinds! in natural performance, (when you don't interfere too much with yourself!), this law always works, so, in doing things for others, you are at your best (compared to doing things for yourself!). But, here is a rejoinder from me, my own view: you must accept yourself as a good friend of yourself, and without feeling shy, or too self-conscious, do things for yourself in many fields of practical life, sothat you do well for yourself and achieve success and fulfillment in a few fields of activity (that success you can use later as a strength to do things for others authentically, and prove that you are, indeed, altruistic, selfless, not selfish!): without being successful in your own efforts for yourself, very often, you cannot do much for others! So, perform well naturally, do good to your friends: and, consider yourself as a very good, deserving friend, too, in your efforts! wish you success and fulfillment! (you seem wellpoised to achieve that, certainly in a plane of philosophy&thoughts!)
