The northern hemisphere of the earth is tilted toward the sun right now, which causes points on the earth in the northern hemisphere to spend longer exposed to the sun, and the further north the point is, the longer it is exposed to the sun, per day.

Here in UK in June the sun sets at 9:30 PM (middle of summer) but in December, it is dark by 4:30 PM (middle of winter). It must be the same in the US

another thing to think about is that one side of a time zone will have different sunrise and sunset times than the other. the eastern side will have earlier sunrises and sunsets than the western side because of the fact the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
