in chemistry, yes. it is defined as one that speeds up the rate of reaction.
but the definition of catalyst i learnt in biology is that it is one that ALTERS the speed of reaction instead

A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy.

The energy rate of the reaction increases due to the action of the catalyst but the catalyst is not changed

No. A catalyst is added to a reaction to increase its rate. An "inhibitor" decreases the rate of a reaction.

In chemistry, a catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction WITHOUT taking part in it.

Catalyst increase the rate of reactions by providing the proper shape/area for other molcules to bind to.

not at all....definition of catalyst is a material which speeds up the reaction without affecting it self...

so the answer is no..it dosent decrease..but increase the reaction speed.

No, it increases the rate of reaction

The dictionary definition is:
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without actually undergoing any change itself.

This is a really good website on them:

When a catakyst increases the rate of a reaction, it is called a promoter else it is called an inhibitor.
