Maybe good, maybe bad. Anyway, we'd have to approach it with caution. We are sufficiently adapted to bacteria and viruses on Earth, and yet once in a while there is a massive epidemic with huge casualties due to some random mutation for which we are not adapted. Just figure what could happen if we came in contact with something completely new, for which we have absolute no immunity; the Black Death in 1350 might look like Heaven.
Then again, we might find that diseases which kill many people might be easily cured by extracts from extraterrestrial plants (just think how many cures have been found in extracts from plants from the tropical forests - and many are still not completely explored.

Scientific knowledge is always a good thing.
We would know our planet is not unique in the universe and it would give us a place to go if there was a natural or manmade disaster that destroyed Earth.

From one perspective, the person is right who says, "it just is." But as to ramifications, Well, I am always for the truth. One good thing would be that we would take another step away from thinking that we are the center of the universe.
