You will see that smoking will be illegal soon.
It's already outlawed in bars, restaurants, schools.. etc//

It's only a matter of time.

Because the Smoking Lobby is much more powerful than the Stupidity Lobby.

It's stupid to not wear a seat belt or a helmet (when riding a bike), but I believe you should not pass laws against being stupid.

I've always thought that if someone doesn't want to wear a seat belt or a helmet then they should be within their rights to not do so. It's a free country, and people should have the inalienable right to be stupid, if they so choose. If they want to increase their risk of permanent injury or death, then who are the rest of us to say they shouldn't?

Pretty easy one....money is the answer. The government receives massive amounts of tax dollars from the sales of cigarettes. They can outlaw smoking in public places to appease the non-smoking voters...but outlawing the actual purchase and smoking of cigarettes would be extremely detrimental financially.

As for seatbelts...it costs nothing to implement the law, it saves lives, and it creates further revenues from tickets issued for non compliance.

The government couldn't give two craps about your health and welfare...they are always concerned, however, about your dollars...

is that a real question, the real reason is because this country was pretty much founded as a tobacco growing colony, tobacco has been and will continue to be our number one exported cash crop, when the govt can make money off of something then you better believe they will continue to do so.

Making & selling seat belts is not a billion dollar industry.

Money - they get money from you not wearing your seatbelt and they get money from the taxes on the sale of cigarettes.

They could care less about your health

Good point... I guess it's all because of the tobacco industry and the money... it's always about the money.
