How would you do this if you have 100 + backup tapes ? And you want to ensure that no data remains in tapes before throwing away. One way is to format but for such large number it is too much time consuming.

Get a Degauss magnet. "gone in 3 seconds!!!". Google for it.

if degauss doesn't work, and even if it does, SHRED them.
one time fee for professional shredding. preferably after degaussing them.
do you have any idea what the content is on the tapes? How sensitive the information is? How hard someone (criminal) is likely to work at recovering the data before giving up?
Incineration is another option... awfully hard to magnetically read ashes.
