Among catholics in Europe the most popular Saint Martin is Martin of Tours (316/317 – 397-11-11, Candes). Many towns and cities have him as their patron saint. November 11, the feast day of Martin of Tours, used to be an important holiday around here. Lots of legends about him, among them "The Legend of the Cloak", about the time he was a soldier in the Roman army.

The first one, Saint Martin of Tours, was a Roman in the 4th century who became a Christian at 20. The favourite story about him is that as a soldier he met a poor man and cut his cloak in two with his sword to share it. He became bishop of Tours and did a lot to spread Christianity. He is the saint patron of soldiers.
