prove actually means use algebra.Therefore correct method is as follows:

Let x = 0.454545454...

then 100x = 45.454545....

Subtracting the second equation from the first gives us:

99x = 45

Therefore, x = 45 / 99

which cancels down to 15 / 33.

Thus proven.

If the recurring part consisted of 3 numbers repeating you would initially multiply by 1000 . The key is to keep the two decimal parts the same so they will cancel each other out.

Hope this makes sense.

15/33 = 5/11
5/ (10+1) = 5 * (10+1) -1 = 0.5 (1+.1) ^-1
binomial expansion of (1+.1)^-1
= 0.5 ( 1 - .1 + .01 - .001 + .0001 + ....) group two together
=0.5(.9 + .009 + .00009 + ......)
=.4545454545
