My best guess is that it's the "mad dog" defense - "Mess with us and you'll be REALLY sorry". the thought would be that it helps prevent future attacks. There's a large group of the Lebanese population that don't want to get involved in the israeli conflict, so I assume Isreal was trying to motivate them to contain Hezbolla.

Unfortunately, this time it didn't do much. Hezbollah probably gained as much a it lost by standing up to Israel fairly well. Now, the locals blame Israel for wrecking their homes an Hezbollah gets the brownie points for handing out Iran's money to repair those houses, and they're more firmly lodged in place. Bad result for Israel.

Why do you think the Israeli parliamentary report said the war was badly planned and badly executed? The results are pretty much "bad".

Israel did not attack Lebanon. it waged war against an armed para-military organization, the Hizballah, that took over vast parts of Lebanon due to the weakness of the local government.

this organization has been firing rockets (modified old Russian rocket artillery) over the Israeli border for years. despite some claims on their side according to which they were targeting military installations, one should only know a little about that type of rocket artillery to understand that at the range they were firing from you can only target cities, nothing smaller - and that's exactly what they've been doing.

the war that took place in the previous summer was an Israeli attempt to disarm and possibly eliminate this organization, after requiring this of the Lebanon government for years without any results, and thus ending the occasional bombings of the cities on the northern border of Israel, along with an attempt to recover 2 Israeli soldiers kidnapped during a Hizballah attack on an Israeli border patrol the day the war broke out.

the success of this campaign, from Israels point of view, was only partial. the main reason for that was Hizballah's use of the local population as a 'human shield'. this went as far as building ammunition bunkers underneath local kindergardens (this in particular was reported by a former resident of Lebanon now living in the UK. when he, while still living in Lebanon a few years ago, asked one of the local Hizballah leaders why they do so, the answer he got was that this way, when a large armed conflict with Israel takes place they win either way: either the Israelis wouldn't dare to fire at a kindergarden, or they will and then the Hizballah will have the chance to spread the photos of the bombed kindergarden worldwide to gain empathy to their cause and hatred towards Israel).

as said in the Vietnam war movie "Apocalypse now", not an exact quote but along the lines of, "you can't really win a war against people that value neither their life nor the lives of their own children, versus the cause they were taught to believe in".

Let me put it this way:

If the people who lived next door to you kept attacking your home, and bombing your house and family, would you just sit there and take it - or would you try and show them they should leave you alone?

I'm guessing most people would opt for the latter - and that's all Israel is doing. The Lebanese were BEGGED time and time again to stop groups like Hezbollah and Hamas from operating in their territory and attacking Israel. Lebanon did nothing to stop these terrorist groups and now, understandably, Israel is weary of her people being killed by bombs and her tiny country being under constant attack.

So she's fighting back. Will it solve the problem? Probably not. Is it the right and logical response? Definitely!
And it's what any other country on this planet would do if also under attack!
