I mean...the USA has it's own form of "insurgency" going on with gang killings and other murders.
Look at it this way:
Murder rates are usually quoted as per 100,000 people per year.
The 10-year average homicide rates (1987-1996) for the United States averaged 8.8. Considering the population of the USA at 300,000,000....
So that was about 26,400.

TWENTY SIX THOUSAND PEOPLE MURDERED EVERY YEAR ---in a country that isn't "IN A WAR ZONE" is a heck of a lot of people folks.

Um, what's the big deal? They're people, and they're dead now. If that isn't some sort of deal, your head needs a check.

Yes, 26,000 is probably agood murder stat for the USA. The worst cities used to have 1,000 murders a year each. But we're talking 300,000 to 600,00 in Iraq in 4 years - that's 150,000 a year - and getting worse; and the population is about 1/10 of the USA. So, if 1.5 MILLION people were dying in the USA every year, would you think it's bad?

First, the people are dying in Iraq because the USA invaded; they dissolved the armed forces and police, so there's no law and order. All the resentment and hate that built over 50 years is suddenly set free. Gangs kidnap people for money, and if they don't pay up, sell them to whatever "militia" will torture and kill them. People kill the groups they hate. Foreigners flock to Iraq for a chance to attack Americans or their favourite hated ethnic groups.

Second - People who have set themselves up as law and order use terror and torture to enforce their idea of "justice" - such as women who don't cover up their faces, or believing in the wrong version of Islam. Speaking your mind, if it is against what the local self-appointed militias believe, will make you a target. Being related to someone, makes you a target. Most Americans are murdered by an acquaintance, for drug deals or domestic violence.

Third - there's the torture aspect; dozens of bodies are found each morning, kidnapped a few days ago and found with torture signs like power drills to the eyes or ankles while alive. Americans typically are shot and stabbed - not the best way to go, but better than being tortured.

Fourth - The random violence. you can't go to the local market without the risk that a car will explode and kill you. Your family could be kidnapped off the street and tortured. Your neighbours could lie and report you to the Americans as a terrorist for the reward, and off you go to Abu Ghraib in the middle of the night until you can prove you're not.

I think it's a big deal. I'm glad I don't live there. Do you wonder why most of them hate Americans now, and think Saddam wasn't that bad?

Cheney and his sidekicks - Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz - have been major screw-ups since the start. But at least Haliburton is getting rich, so Cheney's shares should be worth a fortune.
