I'll just be watching the contest, not participating! But how early should I get there? things like that

You probably want to get there a few hours early.
If the day is nice the beach will be jammed so there will be thousands and thousands of people there.
I also think it is at 7 p.m. this year, not mid day.
So you have to factor that into your visit.

You will probably see a world record. Kobiashi just got his record 55 beaten by some other competative eater (59) but, they weren't Nathans, so get ready to see the man regain the title. Have fun, and if you want to see it up close, you better be near the stage 3 hrs. early.

Take lots of pictures. Coney Island is going to be shutting down after this summer. This is the last year of Astroland and the park. They are tearing out the culture, history and memories that many people have cherished. They are going to develop the area into Huge hotels and casinos.
