my little sisters name is Sterling and my friend and I have been arguing about whether its a girls or a boys name.
she thinks its a boys name because only boys are named that - which obviously isn't true since my sister is!

Sterling is supposed to be a boys name. HOWEVER, a name is whatever you make of it. I believe that sterling means little star, so it could go either way. Remember that nowadays names can be given to either sex. I know boys named casey, shannon and tracy. Ashley was originally a boys name. Things change. dont let it bother you. be happy your sister has a cool name.

I looked it up and it wasn't listed under the girl's names. It was listed in the boy's. It is English and means worthwhile. However, my daughter's name is Skylar and it is also not listed with the girl's names (it is in the boy's). If your little sis is named Sterling than it is a girl's name too. Personally, I think it sounds better for a girl anyway.

I've never met any Sterling's before, but my first impression was that it was a boy's name, but........... things change. Ashley and Leslie were once guy names, and now mostly girls have those names. Morgan, Ryan, Riley, the list is endless, are now all unisex names. So, Sterling can be either, but it's still a rather uncommon name.

I've only met one Sterling and he was a boy. Although, its more common as a boy's name, it can obviously be used for a girl as well. no need to argue.

I've always thought it was a boy's name. Never heard of a girl named that until now.
