While Paul has said in every interview since the details on his character's death in "Sunday" were revealed that he DID NOT want to leave, and was shocked and disappointed at the decision to kill off Beckett, no official word has been forth coming from the producers. The only explanation we've had so far is a vague explanation that 'The Powers That Be' wanted to 'shake things up' with Atlantis and decided one of the ways they were going to do that was to kill off a character. Apart from that we know nothing. Brad Wright & Robert Cooper (showrunners for season 3) have commented several times on Torri Higginson's role reduction from a regular to recurring, but have yet to make ANY comment on their decision to kill off Carson.
However, the fans are outraged, and a massive campaign has been launched which has so far been successful enough to have the character resurrected for 2 episodes during season 4. 'SaveCarson's' ultimate goal however, is to see Paul/Carson reinstated to full regular cast member for season 5.

I hope so,he was a great character. My mate reckons that there will do a weird thing of having a replicator copy him and this replicator will be good and stay when the others get beaten.I think this is far fetched but they've done weirder stuff on Stargate over the years.

I don't think he chose to leave. Someone somewhere must have thought it was a good idea to kill him off. However, fan uproar has been big and supposedly he is slated to make a couple of appearances in Season #4. It isn't being leaked yet how he makes a comeback.

I "do not" understand why they "could not" have chosen a more suitable character for removal. For instance they could have killed off Teyla, the over acted, super syllable-d series ruin-er. She's just so annoying and over done, the series would be so close to actually being "good" if it weren't for her character.
