How can others know when I am online? they tell me they see me, and I would like to be unseen to all?

The Internet is a public place where lots of people arrive using different kinds of software, that comes with various visibility of usage.

This would be like you in the real world saying you want to go to a public park, or beach, but you don't want people to see you, your face, your clothing, your description, what you doing. You want to be anonymous in that public place because you have some nefarious criminal intent, or you do not understand that a public place is for the general public, and everyone has some obligations of civilized behavior.

I use AOL most of the time, there is a spot where you can add friends email addresses and then you can see when they are on-line. But there is also a place in the profile section where you can choose to be invisible while you are on line. I don't think you have to be up to "no good" in order to do this. Sometimes I just want to play a game without answering instant messages from everyone.

Most IM's and VOIP programs like Skype, shows your contacts that you are online unless you tell the app to make you "appear offline" or "invisible".

Click on the Help Tab in your app to learn how to do this.

Given that this is a yahoo based site, I am going to assume you are using Yahoo! messenger. On your login screen, put a tick in the box "Connect in invisible mode"

If you are already connected, "My status > invisible to everyone"

The same principle also applies to MSN Messenger, although, you can't connect invisible on MSN.
