I mean to finish a mail, in my example.
It must be a sort of a fad or something.
Just mod and snobbish maybe.
A friend of mine says that he found the figure in a french mail, and that is supposed to be equivalent to "yours sincerely"
Could somebody explain me?

Was it a business letter or a formal one. If it was a formal letter it could stand for ;Au revoir........' If it was a business letter it could stand for the persons signature Andre D.V.

It is Latin, not French. It's a rather antiquated salutation, but it stands for "Altaire Dei Venitei". Roughly translated, it means, "Come to the Lord's Altar" or "Come to the Lord's Table".

Many years ago during the Middle Ages in Europe, the social event of the week was attending Mass. That's the only time you had a chance to see friends who sometimes lived miles away. If you didn't have a horse (very rare, they were reserved for nobilty) or an ox, then you walked. Sometimes a dangerous walk.

So those who could write, sent letters to each other that a passing King's Knight might deliver for a bite to eat or a loaf of bread.

That's the reason for the salutation. Today, we might say, "See you later". It's kind of like what we use still today on invitations, "RSVP", or "Responde Sil Vout Plais" (that's French), or "Please Respond". Just an old tradition that some Americans and Europeans still use.

Hope that helps.

Hmm, friend says he found it in French mail - is that some obscure reference to a french letter?

"ADV" can stand for a lot of things, but there it probably stands for "advertisement."
