Can't the oil companies do away with it and just refine the regular and premium. This could possibly boost supplies of the gasoline that people actually use, and cut down on their costs at the same time.

I realize some cars need higher octane that is what premium is for, but is your car really going to recognize 89 as opposed to 87 octane. Regular or Premium I say no Plus.

Well fatty had a good point but i have a vehicle that gets 27 miles to a gaollon so what he is saying that if I use the expensive stuff i may get 40 miles per a gallon? I doubt it. I have a 94 ford aspire and it has always been excellent on gas and i dont use no additives or the high octane crap....i agree we should do away with it..

I agree with fatty o's answer - a friend of mine has an older Audi and it ONLY takes the higher octane grade, or else it knocks like no one's business.
I used to get mid-grade to "increase the performance" of my V6, but find that regular is just fine. Instead, I spend a few bucks every now and then to clean out the fuel system with a separate additive.

Some older cars and higher end cars require a higher octane fuel and so they make it, but they make it in smaller quantities and make it more expensive so less people buy it. It also boosts horse power and makes your car get better miles per gallon.

the reason it is produced is because some engines, especially in high performance vehicles, require it. otherwise, the engine does not run efficiently. so, you would have to stop the production of these vehicles, not the gasoline that powers them.
and while we're on the subject, why don't you petition the government at the state and federal levels to reduce the taxes each receives on a gallon of gas...THIS is the real reason that gas prices are so high...

When I had my Harley I would use the highest octane available, but for my Mazda it is only the regular unleaded.

Yea I do. Just because you're too cheap to pay for the better gas, you deserve to have a messed up car.

If it was losing money because no one bought it do you think they would still make it and put it into the tanks? Apparently enough people buy it because it is still there.
