Civil War reenacting?

Question

Ok I wanna get into reenacting really bad I've alway had a great passion for it and now I need to do something about it...i live in Pennsylvania and I want to reenact for the south I found a unit a few miles north of me in Carlisle its the 9th Georgia Light Artillery Batallion Company A, Leyden’s Battery
Wheat, D D Col Ret...I don't wanna call and act like I know nothing about getting started so can anybody give me a link to this place or explain something, I prefer somebody who actually reenacts so thank you!

I've always wondered what the attraction was for spending several days marching across fields carrying a 20 lb rifle, wearing a wool uniform in 90+ degree Summer heat, breathing gunpowder smoke etc.

I volunteered with the 8th New Jersey but since I am a woman they made me do woman reenacting, no females are allowed to be soldiers in our infantry. Once I expressed interest, they sent me a packet (two actually!) of all the info I would need to get started including all the clothing, gear, etc I had to find/make and how to do so. There was also a meeting schedule, battle maps and a history of the unit's actions. It was a lot of fun at first but got old quickly since i was designated to be on the sidelines of the battles in the summer wearing a heavy dress and doing nothing.

Oh, PLEASE do call! We veteran reenactors love to hear from potential new recruits and we do NOT expect you to know everything before you join us. We all would absolutely delight in teaching you all you need to know. The unit you've found will have a number to call and probably a web page to boot. Most units are family-friendly and do not hesitate to accept girls too. You would, if you chose to portray a soldier, have to hide the fact that you're female while in uniform - but that would also give you a unique opportunity to let other women know how often females actually did contribute to the happenings of the time period. My wife, my daugher and my granddaughter are all into reenacting, and I'm working on getting my boys into it too. But I gotta tell ya - we don't look too kindly on Rebs in these parts. They're too smooth at getting our women to dance with 'em at the Blue and Grey Ball! And many a true-blue young Yankee has fallen to the charms of those clever and devious Southern belles....hey! There's a magazine for Civil War reenactors called "Camp Chase Gazette". Look 'em up on the Web at www.campchase.com. That, and Civil War Historian (should be avaliable at any good bookstore) magazine should give ya plenty to think about! And so could "Citizen's Companion", a magazine dedicated to reenacting civilians connected with the Civil War.
Whatever you do, DON'T be embarrassed about being a beginner! You'll meet other beginners and share their experiences - and before you know it, you'll be putting on sergeant's stripes!
BTW - if y'ever come across the 12th US Infantry or the 117th NYVI, look up the senior surgeon - that'll be me!

I used to be in civil war reenactments but i live in alabama so it's alot easier to get into, it's alot of fun i had a great time yes it's very hot and loud but the people are great. the people are very nice there not racist or anything but you just need to go to a few and then go around to different units and just see if you get along with the folks there then if you do ask them if you can join . that's all i can think to do. just go to few first, but i warn you it is very expensive.
