Do you mean First Nations people? I've seen lots of Indians with facial hair - all those gurus with their long beards.

If you're referring to First Nations, then those people are descendants of Asians. Thousands of years ago they migrated from Asia, up through present-day Siberia and Alaska, then south and east throughout the Americas.

BTW, the poster Kent is totally off with his explanation of the word "Indian". It sounds real, but it isn't. Indian refers to the people of the Indus River, i.e. India, and variants of this word have been used back to the Ancient Greeks. North American Indians were originally called Indians because they looked like they were from India and/or the people from Europe who sailed there had mistakenly thought they had reached India.

If you go to Asia, you'll see that many mongoloids have no or little facial hair. I'm guessing you don't have any Japanese or Korean friends, or simply don't notice.

But it is an interesting question, as some surely must have had a few whiskers. I too wonder what sort of razor they would've used to shave.

Indians, or those of the First Nations, not having facial hair is stereotypical of Hollywood's projection. While many American Indian males have less facial hair, others have an abundance.

I've read that those having hair and wishing to remove it did so by plucking out the hair or even shaving as is done today.

Several northwestern tribes grown beards and mustaches and have done so for centuries. The same holds true for the southeastern tribes as well.

I believe this question is best answered by those that truly know: American Indians.

I remember an old movie, a western, in which an American Indian saw a white man shaving, and didn't understand why. The white man explained that white men grow hair on their faces, and the Indian was amazed.

I assume it must be something hereditary. That some people have the genes to grow beards and others don't. And American Indians seem to not have them. Or at least some of them don't, or most of them.

Or maybe it's just an urban legend. Maybe they just shave frequently, but secretly.

They plucked the hair from their face. Eventually the hair stopped growing. In addition, their hormones didn't cause excessive hair growth like in caucasians. Haven't you noticed that Oriental Asians and South Americans don't seem to have much in the way of facial hair?

many do/did not grow facial hair. Some in the Pacific Northwest did.

Note to Ummm: Actually, use of yhe term "Indians" in the Americas predates that of today's India (then called Hindustan), and originates with the Spanish term "In dios," meaning "those who walk with god," to describe the peaceful Carribean peoples before they began to enslave and/or slaughter them. As native peoples themselves still use the term "Indian," I use it too.
