Elvis Presley without a doubt

How the hell could Elvis Presley be the Godfather of soul!? He he learned everything he knew from black southern blues artists. And besides, Elvis didn't sing soul music. He sang rock and roll with soul influences. So, to answer your question: James Brown is indeed the Godfather of soul.

Actually, it all comes down to personal tastes. Elvis was the first Rock and Roll sex symbol and gave rock and roll the boost it needed. James Brown pretty much laid the foundation for funk and no man could outdance him in his younger years. He also wrote songs with social and political messages.
Since Brown wrote his own songs I'd have to say he had a little more talent than Elvis, who, as far as I know didn't write any of his own songs (I could be wrong).
Still, both were great performers.

Apples and oranges - it's all relative. BUT I would have to go with James Brown for the live onstage entertainment. He was full of energy and because of his background he had way more struggles than Elvis to overcome. Hardest working man in Showbiz - that's the truth. James wrote music that was politically topical too which makes it more meaningful to me. I also prefer the funkier styles that James brought to music. More people sampled his music over Elvis' I'm sure.

Gotta to be Elvis. Brown is good, and i like a lot of what he did.. but too much yelling and not enough actual singing. Elvis could sing, really sing.. and he didn't need a bunch of things to throw you off if he missed a chord.. for he never did.
