I just bought a 98 Pontiac Bonneville about a month ago. I t is due for an oil change and the previous owner said he used synthetic oil while he had it. I really can't afford the pricey oil changes, so is ok to switch back to regular? Thanks

Regular oil is just fine.

Look. In every car I've ever owned except one, I've used regular oil and changed it every 5k miles. I've never had an oil related engine problem in any of them, and I keep them for a long time.

On the one, I was a dumbass and only gave it oil changes like ever 15k miles, and had to replace a camshaft.

Bottom line, Synthetics do offer an additional level of protection. So if you are driving up and down a lot of hills, or on dusty roads, or tow a lot of stuff, it's worth it to pay for the extra protection. But if you are just driving normally, regular old brand name motor oil is just fine, and changing it every 5k should be just fine too.

you can go longer between oil changes with synthetic oil than regular oil this would make the cost about the same . you might start using oil if you make the change . it shoudn't use much if any. look in the owners manual it will probly say you should change oil at least every 7500 mile more often if short drive.(town driving), cold weather , hot weather ,or dusty conditions. in most conditions I would use synthetic and change every 5000 miles, get the 5000 mil oil or 15000 mile oil. it does't cost much more.

Run Shell Rotella-T it has more lubricity than any other oil on the market. Change at owners manual specification.

yes it is fine - actually a smarter idea than spending the extra cash on such a stupid product that really does no better than conventional oil.

Stay on top of the oil changes and you will be fine.
