This is a real touchy subject.
Rape victims are often treated badly, but in large part this is due to so many false rape claims throughout time.
There are men serving time for rape even though DNA evidence has shown that they are not guilty. I guess because OJ proved that DNA evidence is unreliable, or something.
The number of women serving time for rape is almost nil, but not because it doesn't happen. It is just the past few years that people have started doing anything about it.
All of which adds up to...?
Probably

Have you ever known a rape victim who pressed charges against her perpetrator? Have you seen what she has to go through? Have you seen her on the stand being questioned about *her* sexual history? Have you seen her PTSD symptoms flare up as she relives the agony during the long legal process?
I simply cannot fathom someone going through all that just because she changed her mind about sex.
In the U.S., only 40% of survivors report the crime. Only 7 percent of those go to trial, and only 1 percent of accused rapists are convicted. Prosecuting a rape is incredibly difficult. Call your local county attorney's office and ask them how many accusations actually get charged out, and I think you'll be surprised.
With only 1% of accused rapists being convicted, and the long, arduous, and stressful process of court for the victim, my answer is no - I do not think there are a lot of men sitting in jail awaiting trial for rape they did not commit.
I do believe that there are some false accusations, about the same as there are in any other crime (and FBI statistics back that up). My concern is with the hundreds of rapists who never are punished for their crimes, for raping our sisters and mothers and friends and colleagues. That is what makes me sad.

i think that it is probably at least as common as men actually raping women. Since the definition of rape has changed from the obvious "club a stranger over the head and force her" to "lesser" or harder to prove rules, then the lines get blurred and there will be many more accusations that are iffy.

NO. Most rapes are real only maybe 1% are liars. Usually the woman has nothing to gain by reporting a rape about some man.

Yes I do. I have always said that there are women who will accuse a man of rape for revenge or out of embarassment.
of course there are men who rape women, but I do feel there are quite a few men who are falsely accused.

I think so. I think alot of times, the woman will be ashamed of herself for having sex, so she will blame it on rape.
However, it's not like the guy was innocent. If he remained abstinate in the first place, he could never be accused of rape.

No, it isn't common. Also, they don't have to sit in prison. That's what BAIL is for. With forensic science it is easy to eliminate them as suspects.

i have no clue, it seems really difficult to find empirical evidence for support--one way or another.
