Compression shorts are helpful to keep you from pulling a ham and help keep your quads in good condition during practice and matches.

I wear compression shorts because I play soccer and sometimes when I slide my shorts will come up and they help not only protect my leg from getting a burned, they help me keep my privacy. I agree that a lot of girls wear them for attention, but most athletes wear them to help support the upper leg muscles.

they act almost as a brace for the hamstrings and quads (but mostly hamstrings) to help prevent injury without really limiting mobility.
