There were two very creative and influential periods in my opinion: 1965-1973 (Dylan, Beatles, British Invasion, San Francisco psychedelic, Jimi Hendrix, blues-rock, heavy-metal); and the mid-80s to the mid-90s(underground college-rock, garage bands, grunge, and alternative, including the Seatle scene of Pearl Jam and Nirvana).

I know that's a broad range, but when you think about it -- there's just so much music from that time that people still listen to today and so much that other artists were inspired by

I don't think they're the most important years of rock n' roll, but they are definitely my favorite. So many good bands and albums.

I am a big fan of 1997. OK Computer (probably the best all around album to come out since then), Terror Twilite, I think Beck's album Mutuations came out that year. 97 was a wonderful year.
