for my chemistry class.. need info asap we are making bowls out of old records and i need to find out how this is related to science

If you can heat the plastic to softening to form it into bowls, then you have a thermoplastic resin, such as polyvinyl chloride. This is as opposed to a thermosetting resin like Bakelite or shellac, which is what old 78-rpm records were made of. Thermoplastic means that the very long polyvinyl chloride chains are not crosslinked together, as they are in Bakelite and the kind of polyester they use for boats and shower stalls.

PVC's of this type if heated to temps needed to change shape and form release VOC's and other toxins that could cause cancer, birth defects, etc....

i wouldn't.
