My feeder is on a pole so I slid a piece of PVC pipe over the pole (about 4 foot long). The squirrels can't dig their claws into it so they can't climb it. If tree hung, you need an umbrella type cover over the top so squirrels cannot climb down over it to get to the feeder.

Pepper. Birds have no saliva glands, so it won't bother or hurt them. But it will give squirrels a case of the sneezes. My bird feeder is mounted on a pole. I spray the pole with Pam. It's hilarious to see the squirrels try to climb it. They look like little squirrel firemen sliding down the pole.

I had good luck using a LARGE metal plate mounted on the pole. It must be larger in radius than a squirrel can reach or the squirrel will just climb over it.

Add cayenne pepper to the seed. Birds don't sense the hotness, but the squirrels sure do.

Nope...anything would be bad for both birds and squirrels. All you can do is put up a barrier. Those squirrels are pretty smart too.

Try the pepper thing... but that didn't work for very long.
I ended up popping them with a B-B gun.
