Lava is hot. So hot, that there is really nothing that can stop it, so buildings, people, farms, everything in the path of plastic flow lava is going to get destroyed. Airborne releases of ash are suffocating, but more dangerous is the release of hydrogen sulfide and methane, which instantly kill. A cloud of these emissions generally moves so fast and is so large, that there is no escaping it.
It's not good to be in the path of a volcanic eruption.

Lava flows burn everything in their path to cinders. They don't stop unless it forms its own dam or hits water. Airborne can destroy crops miles away and even change the temperature of the surrounding areas. Check out the coldest summer on either discovery channel, or it might have been the history channel. It was about when mt. st. helen blew. That year we had Snow in June here in Michigan. It can kill wildlife in the immediate area as well.
