There is nothing wrong, this is normal. Betta's cannot typically reside with other Betta's. They have a natural aggression towards each other. In the mating process the male is going to be very rough with the female from my understanding and this is natural. LuvinLife, and Kylie are both Betta breeders as well as magicman who won't be on today. I have a Betta but I have not bred them so I am only going on my understanding of what I have learned from them. Just keep an eye on the male and female, and take the female out only if he gets too rough with her.

ADDITION:

Absolutly double that from PeeTee. I did totally forget to mention that. If your female does not develope a gravid spot on her indicating she is producing eggs, then it's too soon to put her in. Good catch PeeTee

Probably the female is not in spawning condition, she's running for her life! The male will kill her if she is not "ripe".
In the wild he would just drive her away, but in a confined area he will kill her.
