I'm making a 6' high dog eared fence. I was told I should leave space between the fence and picket. How much should I leave. I also have a hill that was created after removing the old fence. Should I chop this hill off.

You know, I don't know if there's a rule of thumb or not. I would leave enough so that the pickets don't rot, you wouldn't want this. You wouldn't want them to high so animals like dogs could get through so, I guess it's your choice.

I would leave 1" that will keep the bottoms of your picket from rotting down the road. As for you hill thats up to you if you want to put the work into removing it, but in my opinion it will make the fence look better if it was strait insted of going up and down a hill.

as said before leaving room at the bottom so the pickets don't rot but also enough to weed wack under. but not so much to let the animals in or out.
