. i also have a kitten that was the runt of the litter and i found her in our storage building almost starved to death. I took her in and raised her as my own child. that was almost a year ago. My family all say that i have a gift for small animals but i don't really know what i want to do. We had a dog for 10 years and my grandmother got sick and i had to take care of him. I helped take care of him while my grandmother was sick and in the hospital. I love all animals and hate to see when one gets hurt or abused. We adopted a mountain fiest and we brought her home as soon as we got her home she started smelling around and looking around at her new home. Then she came up and from the moment we got her i had my own little four legged shadow. i can't go anywhere without her following.

Obviously you love animals very much! That is important in becoming a vet of course, although I've always been told by vets that when applying for vet school and they ask why you want to be a vet, "because I love animals" is not a good answer.

If you're considering becoming a vet, you need to decide if you want to go through the training - 5 or 6 years at vet school. You also need to know what the life of a vet is like an decide if it's for you. They work long hours, and much of the time is spent with people rather than animals - and of course there is a lot of science involved and you have to become good at surgery. These are the reasons I decided to become a vet nurse rather than a vet.

From what you've said I think you'd be good working for an animal charity, somewhere like the SPCA/ASPCA or whatever, somewhere where you can spend a lot of time helping animals find good homes. If, on the other hand, you are also very scientific minded and think you would like to work in the profession that has the highest suicide rate (it's a stressful job) they being a vet could be for you!

You sound alot like me. My whole life I've been rescuing animals and my whole family has been telling me that I should be a vet since I was 13. I rebelled and when I got out of high school I wanted to be a bridal consaltant. Well halfway through school I relized that I didn't want to do that either. I took a year off and decided that I wanted to be a Vet Tech. This way I could get a feel for it and I would be the one handling the animals. Vets do most of the diagnosing but the techs get to do all the cool stuff. I've got 6 months left of school and I'm still loving it. I figured that if I want to continue my education later I could and become a vet later on in my life. If you really feel a connection with animals you really should have a career working with them. I waisted 2 years of my life trying to find something that I liked when I was hearing ever since I was little what I should do. They were right. Hope I helped a little. Good luck

Its obvious that you love animals and that is the best thing to have if you want to become a vet.

I thought about it when I was younger but after apprenticing for a few weeks at a vet's office, I realized it wasnt the right thing for me. Too many animals came in terrified because they knew they were getting shots. Others came in incredibly sick and others came in dying and needed to be euthanized. There were too many bad things happening to override the good they were doing. Vets are incredible people and you need to have the stomach to be one. I dont.

Instead, I becan volunteering at pet shelters and helping out at rehabilitation centers. In places like that, you are doing the same thing you have been doing now. Hand raising abandoned kittens/puppies/squirrels, etc. Some pets that show up in the shelteres are feral and its the most rewarding feeling when after weeks of spending time with that wild dog or cat, it comes up to you and actually lets you pet it and eats out of your hand!

Id definately say to apprentice and see if thats what you really want to do. If you want to help animals, there are a lot of options out there!
