Well I don't believe that there is a base on the dark side of the moon. And if there is, how did the TV show find out about it?
But as to the reasons why we haven't been back to the moon yet, I have 3 things that I think contribute to the cause.
1. Poor technology (With those shuttles, and their liquid rocket fuel, poor structure, and insufficient durability, it's not a huge wonder why we can't seem to get out of our own backyards. NASA needs to upgrade. As big as space is, carrying rocket fuel around is just not practical.)
2. Cost of missions. (Equipment, supplies, and astronauts-AND adult diapers aren't cheap, and NASA keeps losing funding to the war.)
3. Lack of interest. (Inspite of the potential new homes, resources, and knowledge that could be awaiting us out there, this doesn't seem to be where the people's general attention is focused.)

Mankind has seen the dark side of the moon, (which is not actually dark all the time, this is a misnomer, it is just the side that faces away from us). It was seen by past travels to the moon.
There is very little on the moon worth building a base for, the only thing worth building a base there for is as a launching pad for further expansion into the solar system (as a stop over for travellers from Earth). Even then, it is less cost to build it in earth orbit.
Mankind is sending missions to the moon in the near future, China and the US have begun projects already. Estimated time is 2011.
China is seriously considering a future Moon base.
If a moon base is made then it will most likely be built on teh side facing the earth... this is because it makes communications easier and more direct. If a base was on teh opposite side then it would have to use satelites to communicate with the earth as a signal would not travel through the moon.

In the last few decades the interest was lost. Big problem is... NASA has always struggled with funding. That is why they go through all this trouble to keep the shuttle program alive. The can't afford an overhaul.
We have see the other side of the moon already. It does look a little alien, due to all the small asteroids and space debris. You can think of our moon as a little shield. And I am sure save used from a little nasty strike. Due the moon's rotation and it revolution around the Earth, we always see the same side.

Until now, there has been no profit in it. Now we know there are products that we need on the moon as well as a proving ground for the technology to live on and colonize Mars. If you think you can do a 9 month road trip in the darkness and cold of Antarctica in a mini van not even stopping to pee or get a sandwich, then live in an environment harsher than the top of Everest on the very best of days, there is a job just for you!

Money.
While the Apollo program was still going strong, the budget was cut (there was supposed to be a base on the Moon, a space station...). The budget was diverted to the development of the space shuttle (and the space shuttle CANNOT go to the Moon; not designed for it and cannot be modified for it).
So they finished the trips that were too far advanced to be stopped but they did not add any money in what were then "future" Moon projects.
Now, depending what you mean by "we", we (humans) may be going back to the Moon (China or India? who will be next?)

We are not only building a space station, but we are also doing all kinds of other things to find out whether we are alone in this universe or not. Scientists regularly listen on very sensitive radios to detect any possible radio waves from outer space. Bigger and better telescopes reaching out hundreds of light years from where we are is another step. Whether we will ever find out for sure if we are alone in this universe remains to be seen. Either way, it is a humbling, and slightly frightening , thought.

on the dark side of the moon it is about -200 degrees celcius, on the light sice of the moon it is around +200 degrees. astronauts go on the edge of the light/dark. we dont go to the moon anymore because it is pointless because it is just a big rock orbiting earth. I dont think we are alone, not with countless galazies and trilolions of planets out there.

We don't go to the moon cause there is no need for us to go.
Nothing has changed since we've last been there.
We'll have a base there in order to get us to further places. It'll be as a refueling center, repairs, etc...

The actual truth is that ,no one has ever gone to moon.Every thing was faked in a studio. If they have gone then ,they can easily go now ,but they haven't.I don't think we r alone in this universe, but for the ufo's to make base in the moon is something unacceptable, coz they don't believe in base like us ,I think.Their ship is their base.

Humans are not the only things in the universe. There exists angels and demons; God and Satan. I believe that people have seen UFOs and aliens, but those things are not as they seem. I believe that they are manifestations of demons trying to invoke fear into the hearts and minds of people. This would make sense as Satan's #1 tool against us is fear.
But no worry, those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior also has accepted authority over the Universe. An authority that even "aliens" and "ghost" HAVE to, HAVE to obey.
I think NASA is trying to do a lunar launch in 2018.
