If you feel insecure about your financial future, that your job may be downsized, shipped offshore, given to an illegal immigrant willing to work for less, lose benefits such as medical insurance, etc., etc., then read "Down and Out in Paris and London."
All the other stuff, the talking animals, totalitarianism, fighting someone else's war, is good and fine but I found "Down and Out" the most relevant personally.

You can start with animal farm which is the closest to 1984.
Homage at Catalonia is also very interesting, it is about his experiences in the spanish civil war. Although short and personal it is one of the best books on the subject.
