a) one week bill works 6 hours and ben 15 hours. their total earnings are 88.20$... so they each received 44.1 $

$123.14
sorry that's how much they earn together,
Ben earns $43.24

Here's how I got there...

To earn the same amount $44.10 they both worked different hours. Bill 6, Ben 15.
15/6=2.5 or 6/15=0.4
Therefore bills hourly rate is 2.5 times Ben's or alternatively, Ben's hourly rate is 0.4 times bills.

Now if bill earns $79.90 for 17 hours the he is getting 79.9/17=$4.70 an hour. Therefor Ben gets 0.4 times that amount an hour. $4.70x0.4=$1.88 an hour.

so if he works 23 hours at $1.88 an hour he gets, 23x1.88=$43.24 total.

Hope that helps.

You say that they get paid in the ratio of the number of hours that they worked yet in part a they both get paid the same even though they worked a different number of hours.
