It took me right at 3 months to recover from a badly sprained ankle and you know as well as i do that it's much easier to tell someone to stay off your feet than is actually possible so, just keep walking and give it plenty of time. It will heal!!
Please pay no attention to the bone head that told you to run on it or wrap it up and leave it 3 days without unwraping it. Neither of these will help and could cause you even more pain however, you could buy an oversized ankle brace to compensate for the sweeling but, be sure to remove it at night before going to bed since an injury will swell more at night than any other time of the day and disregard the statement about ice and heat packs. At this point it's way to late to use either and will just be a waste of your time.
Good luck to you!!!

A sprain may never heal if you don't treat the joint properly. The ankle must bear a lot of weight (nearly all the weight of the body is on it). It can move in almost any direction, which makes supporting muscles important. And wearing heels makes your ankle more wobbly, which increases the likelihood of spraining it again. For a year or so, wear over the ankle boots that either lace tightly or fasten tightly somehow. Flatter heels are better, but the ankle support is key. Exercise against resistance to make your ankles stronger. If your ankles are sore, try biking instead of walking - it's much more gentle on the ankles.

Best thing ? No weight on it until it is pain free.
A "sprain" is partial tear in supporting or connective tissue.
A very minor sprain can have you on it in a day. A really bad one may need surgery, or take 5 months to heal.
Get a pair of crutches, and DON'T put weight on it for two weeks, except to test it occasionally with VERY light pressure.
Elevate it when possible, and still use ice packs for a few days. Gentle heat off and on after three days, and keep a sock on so it does not get cold.

I sprained my left ankle 10 years ago. The sprain was so back I also tore blood vessels and tore ligaments with some muscle. It took me 2 years to recover. i was out walking the dog i had at that time during a frosty morning and i slip, but i felt in a very awkward way because i was not expecting it and the outside of my lift ankle jolted out of place and a lot of damage was done, but i am fine again now. i hope yours isn't as bad and you will recover quicker.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

It takes longer for a sprain ankle to heal then a broken ankle. I've sprained mine before and it took a few months to heal and it was just a mild sprain.

I sprained my ankle on New Years Day (great way to start off the year).
I never went to the hospital, but I knew it was sprained. My ankle swelled to the size of a softball... then ot gradually went down. It took a month for the swelling and pain to subside enough for me to walk normally. It took another month for me to put enough weight on it to make it feel normal (i.e. jumping, light jogging, etc.).
The swelling will go down after a couple of months... just follow the advice your doctor gave you. It might seem like nothing is happening, but it is. Your ankle helps support your body weight. It needs time to heal and strenthen itself. Rushing it could only sprain it again.
I recommend doing light exercises once the pain is gone. Rotate your ankle slowly clockwise... then counter-clockwise. Point your foot forward, then upward, stretching the ankle a bit. Don't overdo it, but don't keep it in one position too long (otherwise, your ankle muscles might heal tight in that position and you might lose range of motion).
