I haven't swam in awhile. I decided to try a few laps at the pool today. I could only get five in. I thought it would be easy, just because I workout. Is there any tips on how to do get in better shape for swimming laps? Thanks.

Thanks. Does stretching before swimming help? Also heard about balance, what is that about? Thanks.

Want to get in better shape for swimming? It's easy... swim more laps.
There is no substitute for swimming. It works every single muscle group in your body at the same time. Any other workout will just focus on one muscle group.

Prior to swim season we used to get in some fast paced games of volley ball for warm up followed by "fun" laps on the track. Don't be a slow poke or push yourself. Hit an enjoyable stride and go a quarter or a half or a mile at a fresh pace.
Break your run into quarter miles which really are long wind sprints in relation to swimming.
Do your running or other aerobics, like a rebounder or jump rope, until you are mildly exhausted. Five days of fun runs with some good warm up stretching or some trampoline work, if you are into gymnastics, will make a big, big difference in the pool. Don't forget the kick board.

Two great methods that have worked for me are chords and breath training. Aerobic workout chords are a great way to work specific muscle movement groups that are used in swimming. The Triceps and Latts especially can be worked with high resistance cords. Breath training can be a pain but it really helps with the cardio that is needed during swimming. Either try swimming 25's without breathing on a fairly easy interval or try walking on the bottom with weights and only coming up for air when you really need it. These workouts are good help, but it is necessary to just swim as well.

my best advice is simply keep swimming, if you can make five laps then do five laps. every other day go up one lap, or every day if you can. it just takes some time because being "in shape" and being in shape for swimming are totally different things. this is mostly because you use a lot of different muscles that aren't normally worked by lifting weights or running or whatever you do.

JC is right, swimming is the best way to improve swim performance. The upside is that swimmers are usually able to return to top-shape quicker than runners or cyclists or other athletes who take time off.
Just get in there and push it, it'll be back before you know it ( =
Good luck!

The constant beyond anxious of “swim” is “swam”: “I swam to the island.” However, while the phrase is preceded by way of a serving to verb, it alterations to “swum”: “I have swum to the island daily.” Have is the serving to verb right here, thus "swum" must be used. Swam and swum are each beyond anxious. Swim is gift anxious and long run anxious.
